Furthermore, I suspect an action by Russian propagandists in connection with the war in Ukraine to use Wikipedia’s rules to the letter to eliminate anything that could hinder their disinformation campaign, especially poorly uploaded Ukrainian public domain media. I am for applying the rules (I am often described as psychorigid), but I am not for overzealousness in favor of one side or the other, as this contradicts Wikipedia’s rule of neutrality.

Wikipedia is the world's main source of information and as such is the target of Russian propagandists who are happy to turn its own rules against Wikipedia.

Perhaps we should also better explain to non-English speakers how to write the license for a public domain image used on a private site, which does not place it under copyright.

hello @Kursant504
If en:Le Monde, en:Business Insider, suspilne.media, fr:Le Parisien, fr:L'Express, fr:La Provence and fr:Agence France Presse credit these media as coming from the SBU, it means that they are SBU media, and therefore, they should not be deleted as coming from another source.
It would be surprising if these newspapers wrote under the photos they distribute that these media come from the SBU and that this is not true: so there are not just 6 media from the SBU but indeed 13 (and probably 14).
If a newspaper uses a public domain media, it does not grant them copyright (even if they claimed it, which is not the case here).
Regarding Russian propagandists, getting SBU media from the Ukrainian public domain deleted and applying Wikipedia rules with excessive zeal is entirely in their manner, and here, of the 15 files proposed for deletion, at least 13 are assuredly from the SBU and have the correct license, one is not from the SBU (File:Oleksandr Kobets.jpg) and one is probably from the SBU without proof (but apparently, is part of a series provided by the SBU: same subject, same characters, same places). It is not respecting the copyright of Ukrainian citizens to invoke a non-existent copyright on Ukrainian public domain files.

    @Infrogmation, still in use… Commons’ policies have nothing against original research (assuming that what the nominator said is true). Commons is not Wikipedia, and files uploaded here do not necessarily need to comply with the Neutral point of view and No original research requirements imposed by many of the Wikipedia sites. Commons acts amongst other things as a common media file resource for all Wikimedia projects, and we stand apart from the rules that may be imposed locally by each of those individual projects. Oh, by the way, what the nominator said doesn’t seem to be true. According to the page where the image is used, it is based on this English Wikipedia article. You see, the image is identical to the article’s map. Furthermore, the nominator is active on the English Wikipedia… He should have removed it there, if he thinks (and if he can prove) it is original research. Therefore, I’d say  Speedy keep. Cheers!       Surely they are not exempt. But FoP is essentially an exception, allowing us to use a picture of a copyrighted statue under certain conditions. Ukraine has a separate copyright exception for current events, which also allows to use a picture of a copyrighted statue under certain conditions. Both are from the same class of exceptions, and there is a court practice that publishing a picture of a current event in a book is legal even if a copyrighted work of art is prominent. No need to blur anything out, it is legal to keep them in a picture because it depicts a (notable) event — NickK (talk) 23:51, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

With reference to the proposed Montreal Metro extension map in question, I uncovered the information through my personal researches of archives in Montreal libraries and from relevant books.

Regarding the Metro Blue Line, after years of promises and delay, the construction of the eastern extension from the St. Michel Metro has only recently gotten underway in 2023, while a much-needed western extension from the Snowdon Metro continues to be ignored. Regardless of the accuracy of information, the image is taken from the (linked) Montreal Gazette article. Furthermore - the book Encyclopedia of North American Railroads is not in the public domain. There is also no proof that the STM released an image into the public domain. This image should therefore be deleted.

Thus these images are still copyrighted in the United States. The source of these images is the magazine online archive that uses the incompatible CC-BY-NC license [9]. Following COM:PCP we cannot keep these images.
