Furthermore, I suspect an action by Russian propagandists in connection with the war in Ukraine to use Wikipedia’s rules to the letter to eliminate anything that could hinder their disinformation campaign, especially poorly uploaded Ukrainian public domain media. I am for applying the rules (I am often described as psychorigid), but I am not for overzealousness in favor of one side or the other, as this contradicts Wikipedia’s rule of neutrality.

far too many Ukrainian public domain files are proposed for deletion for a poorly written license for my taste
Wikipedia is the world's main source of information and as such is the target of Russian propagandists who are happy to turn its own rules against Wikipedia.

Perhaps we should also better explain to non-English speakers how to write the license for a public domain image used on a private site, which does not place it under copyright.

"Perhaps we should also better explain to non-English speakers how to write the license for a public domain image used on a private site, which does not place it under copyright." - if you know that any of this resources (except ssu.gov.ua) - stated somewhere that it allow the free commercial use of their photos - you can show it. Based on this, new license templates can be developed. Kursant504 (talk) 05:17, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hello @Kursant504
If en:Le Monde, en:Business Insider, suspilne.media, fr:Le Parisien, fr:L'Express, fr:La Provence and fr:Agence France Presse credit these media as coming from the SBU, it means that they are SBU media, and therefore, they should not be deleted as coming from another source.
It would be surprising if these newspapers wrote under the photos they distribute that these media come from the SBU and that this is not true: so there are not just 6 media from the SBU but indeed 13 (and probably 14).
If a newspaper uses a public domain media, it does not grant them copyright (even if they claimed it, which is not the case here).
Regarding Russian propagandists, getting SBU media from the Ukrainian public domain deleted and applying Wikipedia rules with excessive zeal is entirely in their manner, and here, of the 15 files proposed for deletion, at least 13 are assuredly from the SBU and have the correct license, one is not from the SBU (File:Oleksandr Kobets.jpg) and one is probably from the SBU without proof (but apparently, is part of a series provided by the SBU: same subject, same characters, same places). It is not respecting the copyright of Ukrainian citizens to invoke a non-existent copyright on Ukrainian public domain files.

@Infrogmation, still in use… Commons’ policies have nothing against original research (assuming that what the nominator said is true). Commons is not Wikipedia, and files uploaded here do not necessarily need to comply with the Neutral point of view and No original research requirements imposed by many of the Wikipedia sites. Commons acts amongst other things as a common media file resource for all Wikimedia projects, and we stand apart from the rules that may be imposed locally by each of those individual projects. Oh, by the way, what the nominator said doesn’t seem to be true. According to the page where the image is used, it is based on this English Wikipedia article. You see, the image is identical to the article’s map. Furthermore, the nominator is active on the English Wikipedia… He should have removed it there, if he thinks (and if he can prove) it is original research. Therefore, I’d say  Speedy keep. Cheers! •  Keep. This should fall under the current event exemption in Ukrainian copyright law (which is known to supersede FOP and apply even after the event): here a person is pictured laying flowers in the Glory Park with monuments covered in flowers on 9 May 2013, the Victory Day (and the last one before Russian invasion). The photo has an automatic description from Wiki Loves Earth but it is not a random picture of a monument in a park, it is a depiction of a notable event uk:День Перемоги#В УкраїніNickK (talk) 23:38, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Statues and busts are not exempt from Ukrainian copyright law. It would be OK if we blurred the copyrighted busts out.--KazyKazyKazakhstan (talk) 23:43, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Surely they are not exempt. But FoP is essentially an exception, allowing us to use a picture of a copyrighted statue under certain conditions. Ukraine has a separate copyright exception for current events, which also allows to use a picture of a copyrighted statue under certain conditions. Both are from the same class of exceptions, and there is a court practice that publishing a picture of a current event in a book is legal even if a copyrighted work of art is prominent. No need to blur anything out, it is legal to keep them in a picture because it depicts a (notable) event — NickK (talk) 23:51, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The scupltures here are not de minimis and can be easily cropped and zoomed in on to just the copyrighted portion, failing the WM litmus test for de minimis.--KazyKazyKazakhstan (talk) 12:04, 14 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is not about de minimis, it is a different norm of the Ukrainian copyright law — NickK (talk) 18:30, 14 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:Montreal - map - Metro proposed extensions plan 1978.png[edit]

CSD F1 - no information that book is in public domain, nor that the STM has released this as CC0. Original source seems to be https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/the-metro-at-50-the-clash-with-car-culture Turini2 (talk) 13:20, 10 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oct. 13, 2023
Thank you for your verification request.
With reference to the proposed Montreal Metro extension map in question, I uncovered the information through my personal researches of archives in Montreal libraries and from relevant books.
1 - Encyclopedia of North American Railroads, Bison Books (1985) ISBN 0-86124-207-6 Map on page 129
2 - More specific archival information can be found by contacting the STM (Societe de transport de Montreal) at:
https://www.stm.info/en/about/discover_the_stm_its_history/history/metro-history
and here: https://nelligandecouverte.ville.montreal.qc.ca/iii/encore/record/C__Rb1018182__SMontreal%20Metro__P0%2C3__Orightresult__U__X3?lang=frc&suite=cobalt
Note that, over the decades, there have been many tentative Metro extension proposals made by their planning department, some of which became reality while others were shelved based on reputed financial viability and/or political decisions favouring certain districts over others based on voting patterns.
Regarding the Metro Blue Line, after years of promises and delay, the construction of the eastern extension from the St. Michel Metro has only recently gotten underway in 2023, while a much-needed western extension from the Snowdon Metro continues to be ignored. UrbanLegend4444 (talk) 13:48, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Regardless of the accuracy of information, the image is taken from the (linked) Montreal Gazette article. Furthermore - the book Encyclopedia of North American Railroads is not in the public domain. There is also no proof that the STM released an image into the public domain. This image should therefore be deleted.
(this is also not the place to discuss the pro/cons of the extensions, nor your opinions on them) Turini2 (talk) 09:42, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
