T3ru[edit]

Hello. Due to the restrictions imposed on updating image files in Commons (and I have been updating quite often to improve the quality of images in Wikipedia), please give me the AutoPatrol status for Commons to continue improving. (I have this status in the local Wiki since 2020. Over the past 10 years, I have uploaded/updated about 1000 images, most of them are used in articles.) Thank you. Rocky187[edit]

I'd like to update existing pictures of Swiss parlamentarians via the parlament.ch Website Thank you. Rocky187 (talk) 13:08, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Do you think that the overwrite you did at File:LBS SR05-100172.tif was within the file overwriting guideline? I see that you tried to overwrite File:Walter Frey.jpg. Do you have the same image with a higher resolution? GPSLeo (talk) 13:21, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, File:LBS SR05-100172.tif was probably not within the guideline. Yes, I have a much higher resolution and it's also in color. Is this a major change?--Rocky187 (talk) 16:25, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
A color version of a black and white image is definitely always a major change and has to be uploaded as new files. Generally if you are not sure if something might be a major change or not always consider it as a major change and upload it under a new name. GPSLeo (talk) 17:01, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Star Garnet[edit]

I occasionally encounter images that require minor cropping, updating, etc. Thank you. Star Garnet (talk) 21:53, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Crops like you did on File:Edwin Meese III, Counsellor to the President ME784-7.jpg or File:David Meade Woodson.jpg or the color change at File:Charles A. Bowsher (20383297820).jpg are not minor and need to be uploaded as a new file. None of your recent file overwrites did comply with the Commons:Overwriting existing files guideline. GPSLeo (talk) 07:08, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cropping disproportional, blank background (explicitly allowed via the guideline example) and cropping a signature that shouldn't have been in the upload to begin with would seem to me to fall under "minor cropping," while desaturating a discolored image would seem to fall under "minor and uncontroversial color correction." If they don't, I'd encourage more explicit definitions and examples on the guideline page. Star Garnet (talk) 07:29, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"a signature that shouldn't have been in the upload" Why do you know that the uploader tree years ago did not want to have the signature included? Changes of the aspect ratio should always be considered as not minor as they might break the layout of a page where the photo is used. The color correction you did is not minor. Here is an example on what can be considered as minor color correction. With simply uploading the file as a new one you bypass all potential disputes without having to think about if that might be considered as a minor change. Having a minor change uploaded as a new file does not harm anything. GPSLeo (talk) 08:18, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The uploader with the signature upload should have uploaded the signature as a separate file if they wanted it on Commons; both have potential value but they are separate images that happened to be download together from Google Books. "Changes of the aspect ratio should always be considered as not minor" seems arbitrary, especially when an editor has checked the current usage of the file to ensure that it serves as an improvement across the board. Is that merely an opinion on desaturation, or is it based in policy somewhere? While I certainly create new versions when I believe my changes aren't minor (so, any restoration or anything that changes the composition of the image), being judicious about creating new versions of files helps prevent Commons from turning into even more of a jumbled heap and helps prevent edit wars, other conflict, and unnecessary edits on other Wikis. Star Garnet (talk) 18:03, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"The uploader with the signature upload should have uploaded the signature as a separate file if they wanted it on Commons" that is not how it works. You want a file that is currently not on Commons so you have to upload a new file without making on older file unusable and asking the original uploader to act. Sputink[edit]

Hello, I am fairly active across various Wikipedia languages and I regularly update maps of roads and railways along with various political election/foreign relation maps. I also convert various older SVG Files to newer formats and request these rights. Thank you. Sputink (talk) 13:45, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Why do you write "fairly active across various Wikipedia languages" when enwiki is the only Wikipedia where you are active? GPSLeo (talk) 14:32, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I use a different account for Swahili Wikipedia. Sputink (talk) 15:10, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can you please disclose it? -- CptViraj (talk) 03:29, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Negative. I keep this account very private, Data Privacy Laws in Tanzania are draconian and non existent. If this is a requirement, I would like to respectfully withdraw my request. Sputink (talk) 21:36, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, it's not. I just wanted to check you aren't abusing multiple accounts. If this was a RFA, you might had to disclose it atleast to someone maybe with advanced rights, like checkusers, like they do it on enwiki to ArbCom. But this isn't a case here, AP isn't a big deal and as you are a long-term good-faith contributor, I trust you on that. Leaving the decision for someone else. Thanks! -- CptViraj (talk) 13:13, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Rogger. I want to say almost in 2014 or 2015, I went through a review to ensure I was meeting the Multiple Account requirements. Thanksǃ Sputink (talk) 14:44, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Obscure2020[edit]

I have been going through Wikimedia Commons improving PNG files specifically. I have replaced low-resolution scans with higher-resolution sources, I have repaired poorly-cropped images, and I have also been losslessly optimizing a large variety of images to reduce file size. I would like to be able to continue this work. Thank you. Obscure2020 (talk) 15:15, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What is the actual benefit of the versions you are uploading with the comment "Optimized with OxiPNG and ZopfliPNG"? GPSLeo (talk) 18:41, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The filesize is smaller. They're also often more correct, if you look into technical specifics. You'd be surprised how many photos, graphics, and screenshots get exported as RGBA data even though they're entirely opaque, making the Alpha channel useless extra data just waiting to be trimmed off. In other cases, pixel-art images or images with limited range of colors can be reduced to Grayscale or Palette mode, allowing each pixel to be shrunk to 8 bits, 4 bits, 2 bits, or (in extreme cases) 1 bit per pixel without changing the colors of any of the pixels in any way! I specifically target lossless transformations. Examples of files that simply did not need to be as big as they used to be include Ornithogalum, CA rule110s, Lavaurs-12, and Windows 1.0 Easter Egg. (Visit these links and scroll down to the version history. Compare the filesize before and after I optimized them.) Obscure2020 (talk) 21:51, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Zacwill[edit]

I frequently overwrite files (particularly maps and engravings) in order to improve their resolutions (1 2 3) or make minor crops (4), in accordance with COM:OVERWRITE. Thank you. Zacwill (talk) 22:43, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
At File:Cruikshank - Old Blucher beating the Corsican Big Drum.png, File:Belted plaids worn in the Highlands of Scotland.jpg, File:Laxdaela Saga - Map - Project Gutenberg eText 17803.jpg and some other files the new version is totally different to the old one. They should have been uploaded as new files. GPSLeo (talk) 18:35, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't see how the new version of the Cruikshank engraving is "totally different". It is the exact same image, just in better resolution and with slightly different colouring. These changes seem to be acceptable under the guidelines. If I have overstepped the mark in other cases, then I apologize and promise to be more cautious in future. Zacwill (talk) 18:59, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The colors are not just slightly different. One is the original color of the old paper and at the other one the color was changed to become white. GPSLeo (talk) 17:01, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, if you so strongly feel that the overwrite was unacceptable, then I suggest you undo it. I don't think you would be benefiting Wikimedia, since the original file was so low quality that the details of the engraving were illegible, but at least you would be following rules. Zacwill (talk) 18:30, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thom.lanaud[edit]

I've been working on heraldry for the past 5 years, mainly for the French Projet:Blasons and thus sometimes I need overwrite to maintain or fix files with rendering issues or errors concerning the enblazonment. On (very) rare occasions I also update or fix maps. Thank you :-). Thom.lanaud (talk) 09:37, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
At File:Blason Joinville 52.svg and File:Blason ville fr Gex (Ain).svg you made a major change to a file uploaded thirteen years ago. Such changes should become uploaded as new files. GPSLeo (talk) 14:57, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ArtSmir[edit]

Hello, I ask you to provide me with auto patrol rights, since I have experience in uploading files and am familiar with the basic licensing rules. I more than meet the formal requirements. I also have patrol rights in the Russian Wikipedia section - by this I confirm the transparency of my further good faith intentions. Thank you. ArtSmir (talk) 15:41, 5 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
At File:Владимир-коллаж1.jpg you damaged the proportion and reduced the resolution. Why do you did you this? GPSLeo (talk) 16:46, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I did this so that this collage would be displayed in the preview of an article about this city. Let me explain: when you hover your mouse over the link of an article of interest about a city in the presented list containing many cities, summary information and an image (if there is one in the article) are displayed. In my case, this did not happen, and after searching for the reasons, I decided to reduce the image resolution, after which the situation changed - the preview displayed everything correctly. This was likely because the collage was so busy and at such a high resolution that the standard Wikipedia preview tool simply couldn't handle it and was severely limited in its work. — ArtSmir (talk) 21:29, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

MasterRus21thCentury[edit]

I have been a member of Wikimedia Commons since November 28, 2018, but I became truly active only in the summer of 2021, taking my own photographs and uploading images from free sites. I also replaced low-resolution files with higher resolution ones until the end of October, which corresponds to the interest of the community. In this regard, I am applying for the status of a self-patrolled participant. Thank you. MasterRus21thCentury (talk) 16:22, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Coolxsearcher1414[edit]

Hello, I sort of need autopatrol rights to overwrite files because ever since Commons prevents it for people who don't have the right. Last month I have made edits to the 2024 United States Senate elections retirements map.svg and I really can't do that anymore. Thank you. Coolxsearcher1414 (talk) 23:09, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The guideline is around 500. I think a few hundred more would be helpful. Abzeronow (talk) 21:30, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

源義信[edit]

Hi, I've been working on Commons for years with over 40,000 edits. Recently I found that I need the right to overwrite files uploaded by other users. While I am mainly working on old photographs and sometimes paintings, I need to overwrite many images of low quality (usually from bad sources) with high-quality images from better sources. Thank you. 源義信 (talk) 13:08, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Why did you make this overwrite with a totally different file at File:Vua Tự Đức.jpg. And even if you are the original uploader do not make major changes like you did on File:Painter Lê Thị Lựu and her husband Ngô Thế Tân in Bắc Ninh, 1935.jpg one year after the original upload. GPSLeo (talk) 09:28, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As for File:Vua Tự Đức.jpg, why do you think its totally different? The previous file was imported by other users from a Flickr page. The Flickr user just downloaded the same file as I uploaded later, cropped it, and made some adjustment. What I did was uploading the higher resolution original image without those improvements. 源義信 (talk) 13:44, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As for File:Painter Lê Thị Lựu and her husband Ngô Thế Tân in Bắc Ninh, 1935.jpg, firstly, I consider it as a minor change because the two versions are the same photograph while the previous one is cropped (but the subject of the image was not changed). Thus when I found the higher resolution image, I replaced the former with it. I read the guideline and did not found that there is a time limit for minor improvements (as for me it's neither substantial changes or completely unrelated files). Secondly, the file is only used in one article and the update won't affect the use of this file in the article. 源義信 (talk) 13:51, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Comment In my opinion this is a bit nitpicky. The user clearly has a large amount of quality edits and has been here long enough to deserve a permission like autopatrolled. —MATRIX! {user - talk? - useless contributions} 17:37, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Kekator[edit]

I've been uploading higher resolution versions of images for more than 10 years. I would like to continue doing it but new overwriting guideline requires me to have the autopatrol rights. Thank you. Kekator (talk) 06:25, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You got a warning to not overwrite images in September 2021 and you continued to overwrite files with totally different versions. GPSLeo (talk) 09:32, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You mean really totally different or the same just not cropped identically? Kekator (talk) 14:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can you give examples? Kekator (talk) 14:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Bubba73[edit]

Hello, I thought that I had AutoPatrol rights, but I just tried to upload an improved version of someone else's photo, and it said that I didn't have the right. I've been uploading for well over 10 years, and I've uploaded probably 2,000-3,000 of my own photos and improved probably over 100. Bubba73 (talk) 07:24, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Artificially upscaling like you are doing it is totally unaccented per the Commons:Overwriting existing files guideline. GPSLeo (talk) 09:51, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, I see it listed there, but I don't see why it is unacceptable. It makes a minor improvement to the sharpness, which is a good thing. Bubba73 (talk) 01:02, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is easy enough to create a new file, but then (1) each one needs to link to the other, and (2) all of the links to the photo need to be updated to the new version. And, as far as I know, there is no easy/practical way to do that. Bubba73 (talk) 01:35, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And, by the way, the latest one that I was trying to improve was a photo that was 640x480 pixels! That was the standard resolution for an IBM PC (CGA graphics) in 1987! Some early, poor-quality digital cameras used that format (my wife had one). I sharpened it and upscaled it into something noticeably better, but I could not upload that improved version, simply because it was a larger file than the 1987 standard. Bubba73 (talk) 04:57, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also, I just tried to upload and uncropped version of a NASA Apollo photograph, but it would not allow me to do it. Bubba73 (talk) 05:38, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Back to the original point, I request AutoPatrolled rights (which I thought I had.) Bubba73 (talk) 05:36, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Do you accept that overwriting files with artificially upscaled versions is not allowed? GPSLeo (talk) 11:34, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

OmegaFallon[edit]

I have been creating, remaking, and otherwise editing SVGs for a bit on Commons now and am hoping to get autopatrol rights so I can easily upload new versions of existing files. Thank you. OmegaFallon (talk) 21:26, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

LukeTriton[edit]

Sometimes I edit photographs or look for better digitisation of images whose copyright has expired due to their age. So far, no conflicts with other uploaders. Thank you. LukeTriton (talk) 14:03, 19 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Changes like you did on File:Houghton MS Hyde 76 (1.1.xix) - George Psalmanazar.jpg should never be done to files. GPSLeo (talk) 18:50, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well the colorchange was maybe a thing of personal preference, i will upload those separately in the future. But sticking to George Psalmanazar, i think that changes like File:Psalmamazar Formosa.jpg or File:Psalmanazar2.jpg are useful overwrites. If that's not the case, you can of course just decline my request, since i don't need the permission then. Thanks. LukeTriton (talk) 14:49, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

On File:Standard of Presidents Emeritus of Italy.svg and File:Flag of Albania (1928–1934).svg you made major changes they would need to be uploaded as new files. GPSLeo (talk) 18:53, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@SpinnerLaserzthe2nd Can you give an example of the "locked" flags? Filemover permission probably won't help, depending on the issue. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 19:39, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
File:Flag of France.svg, File:Flag of Poland.svg and File:Flag of Peru.svg SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 20:02, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SpinnerLaserzthe2nd First, those files are protected such that only admins can edit or move them, so the filemover permission wouldn't help.
Second, and more relevantly, (a) what rename criterion do you believe applies, (b) what would you have renamed the files to, if you could have, and (3) assuming you could do so in a way that complied with policy/guidelines, what makes you believe it would be a good idea to move the files? —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 20:08, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Don't mind the other two. However, I will tell you about regarding the French flag:
1. The current colours that displayed in the file is now outdated as because the president had reverted the flag back to its original colours (which is navy blue).
2. I want to rename this to "Flag of France (1974–2020)" SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 00:19, 18 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oppose Unable to give satisfactory answers to my questions, like which rename criteria apply, why moving a file with 2M uses is a good idea (it's not one, it would cause technical problems), and why the other 2 files should be moved consistent with the guidelines. In addition to rename requests I've seen from them in the past being non-suitable, this makes me believe they are not well-suited for this role at this time. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 16:32, 18 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
