Request to merge some units in COM:GNL[edit]

Units in Commons:Use of gender neutral language#Examples should be combined into one unit.

An example says:

"If you want to use a photographer’s picture, please ask their permission first."

  • Fine. The "singular they" is sometimes controversial, but is now generally accepted.

Singular they only exists in English, and gender neutral pronoun may not exist in some languages. That makes translating impossible. Though gender neutral pronoun exists in target language, exact (word-by-word) translation of example sentences may not exist.

Another examples say:

"If you want to use a photographer’s picture, please ask her permission first."

  • Avoid. This makes an unwarranted assumption that the photographer is identifiable as female.

"If you want to use a photographer’s picture, please ask his permission first."

  • Avoid. This makes an unwarranted assumption that the photographer is identifiable as male.

"If you want to use a photographer’s picture, please ask his or her permission first."

  • Avoid. This makes an unwarranted binary assumption that the photographer identifies as either male or female. This is considered to be non-gender neutral and can appear unwelcoming to readers who identify as neither.

Pronouns in some (or most?) languages (Cantonese , Georgian ის, Thai เขา, Turkish o, etc.) don't distinguish gender. Translating these examples is impossible.

Implementations of this policy in different languages should be considered case by case instead of copying them in English blindly. -- 05:07, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@沈澄心, This is an interesting case. If I were to translate any of these sentences into Urdu, no matter if it is his/her/they whatever, the Urdu translation would be something similar. His/her generally would be referred to as "ٗاس کی" (singular), and they to "ان کی" (both singular and plural), but I'd generally use the latter for all the three cases, because it is way more respectful and friendly. Similarly, translating please ask his or her permission first, would be very much difficult, because it would be the same thing on the both sides of "or". ─ The Aafī (talk) 18:18, 7 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Asking for advice![edit]

There is a template {{Cultural Heritage Russia}} with the following text in its sub-template {{Cultural Heritage Russia/layout}} which I don't know how technically and correctly make translatable or just translate in Russian. Any practical advice would be appreciated!

{{{text4|This template and pages using it are maintained by the [[Commons:Monuments database in Russia#Contacts|Russian WLM team]]. Please read the [[Commons:Monuments database in Russia|guidelines]] before making any changes that can affect the monuments database!}}}

@Pacha Tchernof, do you still need help with this? ─ The Aafī (talk) 18:28, 7 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
A helpful tip is that you consider creating a sub-template, Template:Cultural Heritage Russia/i18n and get it marked for translation. It would be something like Template:KARI-source/i18n. It is almost identical to your case. Have a look at: Template:KARI-source and Template:KARI-source/layout as well. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 18:35, 7 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Special:PageTranslation[edit]

Hello fellow TAdmins, I noticed that we have a link to outdated Special:PagePreparation in the note placed at the top of Special:PageTranslation. Don't you think this is unhelpful and thus worth removing? Best regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 11:40, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

PagePreparation is indeed really bad. I would support the removal of this link. --Ameisenigel (talk) 15:13, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don’t think I’ve ever used it (except for maybe trying it out). But I wasn’t aware of the link either – it’s in a local override of MediaWiki:tpt-new-pages, which I don’t see as I use Hungarian interface. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:31, 27 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have been bold and removed the link from {{Page translation instructions/i18n}}. Best regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:28, 28 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
