Rename request[edit]
Renamed File:Miscellaneous Papers on Mechanical Subjects.djvu. If you need these put in place for work at WS, then drop a line on my talk page, and I will attempt to expedite the rename process. By the way, for future files, it would be useful it you were able to lose the Google page at the front. I use DjVuLibre for the task (when I remember). — billinghurst sDrewth 10:04, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

File tagging File:Fremantle Society logo.jpg[edit]
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Fremantle Society logo.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Fremantle Society logo.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Copyright status: File:Fremantle Society logo.jpg[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Fremantle Society logo.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

[Question copied from DR]
"But the oval plaque isn't by a long shot the subject of the photo. Does that count for anything? I've no idea about the rules of how to feature copyrighted stuff I'm afraid. Surely it's permitted in some forms? I mean, you don't mention the other sign in this photo, so I presume that's okay?" Sam Wilson ( Talk • Contribs ) … 12:27, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
Yes, actually it does count for something, but not enough, see Commons:De minimis. The question here is "what is the subject of the photo". The filename suggests that it is the Freopedia plaque, but that is so small that it is certainly not the principal subject. The Freopedia plaque is there because the Moore Building is historic, so presumably the real subject of the photo is the Moore Building and its historicity. In that context, the plaque describing the building is an important part of the image, so Fastily and I agreed that it was not de minimis. I did not mention the other sign and the sandwich board because neither has enough on it to rise to the level of copyrightable.
There are no hard and fast rules on this and on any given image experienced editors may disagree. If a notable person had been in the image, then the plaque would, in my view, have been de minimis. But in assessing an image taken to show one information plaque you cannot ignore the other, larger, information plaque nearby.
If you have questions, you may ask them at the Village Pump in any of 42 languages or on my talk page. I will also watch for questions here on your talk page for at least a week. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:04, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
File:Major George Bland Humble.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) IA-upload time from djvu creation to upload here?[edit]
The bot has done the creation according to the log, though 2½ hr later, still no upload. I am presuming that is not normal. I presume that I have to prod you, there is no instruction on what to do when things stall. Thx. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:58, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Billinghurst: yeah sometimes it hangs and has to be prodded. :-( There are currently no procedures about how to handle this, because I'm looking at it sort of daily to see what's going wrong and hopefully fixing the tool if that's what's at fault. The best thing to do to figure out why it's not uploading is to look at the log; there's a link on the homepage of the tool. What IA item were you trying to upload? - @Billinghurst: Hm, it looks like it's just running out of memory and not completing. 518 pages is a lot, unforunately. I'll see what can be done. (And it's a tricky one to make it provide better log info about, because it just bombs out and so can't give the script a chance to say anything). — Sam Wilson ( Talk • Contribs ) … 21:43, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
- Wasn't criticising, just indicating that I looked and didn't think that it said so. Can the system count pages and and proportionalately allocate extra memory for jobs? License tagging[edit]
Hi Samwilson, I love what the IA-upload bot is doing. One minor thing: I just made this change to the license tag on your example case. Any way to make such manual changes unnecessary, or to coach the bot/user through the process? LeadSongDog (talk) 21:53, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
- @LeadSongDog: yes, great idea! I'm not sure about the death date parameter, because that's not very retrievable from IA, but the pre-1923 tag should be doable. Could you open a ticket in Phabricator?
The other thing I've been wondering about is linking the book template with Wikidata, so that if a Wikidata item exists for a given edition then that sort of info can be pulled from there. It'd have to be done via a wikidata_id template parameter, rather than a sitelink, but that should be fine. Then we could get author info, copyright info, as well as sitelinks to Wikisources etc.
— Sam Wilson ( Talk • Contribs ) … 23:41, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
- I'm not very phab-savy, it might be better if you raised it. Each IA entry should already have an extant OL entry linked, this could be harvested and developed. There's work going on, albeit slowly, to improve the links between OL and Wikidata, e.g. https://github.com/internetarchive/openlibrary/issues/144 which might pertain. Birth and death dates are usually available from VIAF (http://viaf.org/viaf/444796/ or https://viaf.org/viaf/27063124) or ISNI (http://www.isni.org/isni/0000000061343104 or http://www.isni.org/isni/0000000121251077), at least in the case of major authors. LeadSongDog (talk) 18:46, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- I just used it to upload File:Don_Caesar_de_Bazan.djvu and noted a couple of issues. The template couldn't easily handle multiple authors, though I worked around that as best I could. The google first page issue should really be autodetected and autohandled, I got it wrong and others will too. Still, it was quick and easy. Thank you.LeadSongDog (talk) 20:41, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- @LeadSongDog: I removed the cover page. You're right, it shouldn't be manual; but for the time being I think I'm not going to have the time to do anything else (it'd be possible to run it through the Google Vision API logo-detection thingo, and delete based on that, I suspect; not sure if there would be false positives though, which would be bad). — Sam Wilson ( Talk • Contribs ) … 23:47, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Wiki Science Competition 2019[edit]
Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.
If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.
Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

File:Cafe interior in South Fremantle.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

File:Western Australia Local Government Areas.svg[edit]
Hi Samwilson, User:Jarrah Tree recommended contacting you about File:Western Australia Local Government Areas.svg, suggesting you might be able to help. The map about the WA LGAs could do with an update. I spotted the following outdated features, but I don't know how to fix it:
- en:Shire of Broomehill–Tambellup is still displayed as two individual shires, Shire of Broomehill and Shire of Tambellup
- en:City of Greater Geraldton, still displayed as Shire of Mullewa and City of Geraldton-Greenough
- en:Shire of Narrogin, still displayed as Town of Narrogin and Shire of Narrogin
- en:Shire of Northam, still displayed as Town of Northam and Shire of Northam
- en:City of Karratha, still listed as en:Shire of Roebourne
Do you have the skill set to update this map or know somebody who does? Calistemon (talk) 08:06, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:WMAU MediaWiki skin screenshot 2021-05-10.png.
Thank you. |

@Samwilson: , since you created the category, I was wondering if you would consider renaming it, like for example: Category:Cossack Cemetery in Cossack or something else because there is also a Category:Cossack cemetery in Busha, Category:Cossack cemetery in Stina, etc... Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 15:02, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Lotje: Sure, that sounds fine. I think Category:Cossack Cemetery, Western Australia would be most suitable. It sounds less like it's a cemetery for/of Cossacks. — Sam Wilson ( Talk • Contribs ) … 07:46, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Curious about the history of exactly which licenses work on Wikimedia Commons, would love some pointers[edit]
Hi Sam -- we've connected on Mastodon, I'm the Community Manager for Flickr Commons and do some outreach for Flickypedia. I have been poking around this week looking at the history of the way Flickr's "no known copyright" (NKC) designation is or is not accepted on Wikimedia Commons. Here are the things I know:
- if you use the WC upload wizard you can share NKC content from Flickr Commons with the "share images" button
- if you use Flickr2Commons images with NKC it silently fails and I'm not sure if this is by design because of the odd status of NKC or just a bug (I did check here and it was not clarifying)
- I read the discussions linked off of this page
Since this is not entirely my native habitat, though I am a regular Wikipedia user, I wanted to reach out and ask you if you think something has changed in terms of how WC accepts NKC licenses, or if this is just a quirky bug in F2C? If the former, something has changed, if you could point me towards a discussion so I could go read it and get my head around it, I'd be super grateful. We're stoked about the development of Flickypedia but really want to make sure we understand this aspect of the background and our partners at WMF suggested reaching out. Thanks for any info you have. Jessamyn (talk) 15:57, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Jessamyn: I'm not really sure of the history of it all, I'm afraid. It looks like the No known copyright restrictions license is listed here as a valid license in F2C (and nothing's changed there recently). I can't see anything that would be making it fail differently to other licenses. The licenses.setLicense API method says it can't be used there (presumably because it can only be set by Flickr Commons partners and not normal accounts), but that doesn't matter for Wikimedia Commons' purposes, and licenses.getInfo still returns it (not that either of our tools are dynamically looking up the licenses). Sorry I can't be of more help! Sam Wilson 01:27, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
